Here we are, the last, 366th, day of 2016. Bonus day because of Leap Year and 12/31/2016 ends out a very up and down year. So many great things happened in our family this year, but we had some scary moments too. Some great things happened in Sports (CONGRATS CUBS!), but then we have Philly Sports (sigh). And far too much sadness in the World and let's not even start to talk about politics..... so 2016 is done. DONE! But, I am going to try to stay positive in 2017 - we have to. Positive and vigilant and keeping our eyes on what is important. As the Oaklyn Baptist Church's sign has stated for the past week or so, "Doing the Right Thing means Having No Regrets." Here's to doing the right thing in 2017 and having no regrets. May your New Year be filled with love and happiness! And, to 2016 - SO LONG, FAREWELL!

Final Countdown
So we have made it all the way to Day #365 of 2016. 12/30/2016 is the 6th day of Christmas and, even though the Radio (darn it XM) no longer is playing Christmas songs, they are still on my mind. On the Sixth Day of Christmas, My True Love gave me Six Swans (a Swimming)....so I thought I would pick a swan song tonight. Not a lot of good songs about swans, so I am taking the swan song meaning as one's final performance. So, to celebrate the year's final performance, I will pick one of my favorite finality songs (even before the Penn Band made it a standard). Looking forward to counting down and seeing the end of 2016 tomorrow.

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
I am really enjoying the relaxing vibe of the last few days of 2016. Day #364 started with basketball again (this time a loss, but it was fun watching Alexa get three quarters of playing time!) And then we capped off 12/29/16 with Moana. Then, while letting the dog out for the last time this evening, I looked up and saw a bevy of stars (a rarity in this light pollution kinda world)! Since it is still Christmas time, I will use this song about a midnight clear for my song of the day.....and, with Moana's girl-empowered message, the Celtic Women are a perfect group to sing it tonight.

Call Me
We have reached the last palindromic day of 2016 - 12/28/2016 was Day #363 of 2016. And, like many (most?) of the palindromic days of 2016, it was a great day. Morning was basketball (WIN for Colls Girls Varsity in the Christmas Tournament!). Then we had a trip to the mall (I spent the time in the Apple Store finally getting a phone with more space, thanks to my friends in CA!), an amazing family dinner (using gift cards), and then an family evening at home. A great way to spend the 4th day of Christmas. And my true loves did not give me calling birds....BUT, Blondie sings a song about calling! Night All!

12/27/16 was the third day of Christmas. Day #362 of 2016, and, as I said to my kids - it's FRENCH HEN DAY! Ok, that is not true, I made it up. A day of relaxation and movies (one in the theater and one from the DVR) and not much else to speak about. Given the Frenchness of the hens, I present to you the song I think of when I think of French.....a Beatles classic.

I Wish Every Day Could Be Like Christmas
The Day After Christmas, 12/26/2016, another great family day. Day #361 of 2016 and Day TWO of Christmas. I like to remind people, around this time of year, that Christmas has TWELVE days! So, on this day of two turtles doves (and a partridge in a pear tree!), I present this Bon Jovi song about Christmas spirit being present every day of the year. Because, for sure, we ALL need to keep the Christmas spirit going, especially into 2017. Enjoy and Good Night!

Faith
Christmas Day - day #360 of 2016. Am awesome day with family again, both in NJ and in PA! We visited Sarah's grandmother in her room in rehab - she is doing well!! And we had our York, PA Christmas traditions. We had some difficulties today (with the car and with the schedule, all minor) but everything worked out fine! We should have Faith! And, in honor and in memory of George Michael, here is his classic. Merry Christmas all!!

Silent Night
Christmas 2016 was the 359th day of 2016. Only a week to go and 12/24/2016 was a great day. I love the part of the Christmas Service where we pass the light, with candles, with very little other light available. We sing Silent Night in English and in the original German as well (OFR IS a German Reformed Church after all.....). And tonight we did our prayers in the candlelight as well. Great idea, Pastor Michael! I love this version of Silent Night by Stevie Nicks, and I offer it tonight to you all and wish you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Winter Wonderland
Day #358 was a shorter than usual day at work (which included cookie day in the office AND an awesome lunch with two former colleagues). Then an amazing dinner with friends and then to the movies. And, after the movie, even though it was late, we drove through town and saw light displays! Oaklyn truly is a Winter Wonderland these days, especially on 12/23/16....Christmas is almost here!

Angels We Have Heard On High
12/22/2016, only three days until Christmas, and on Day #357, I do not really need an excuse to just start using my favorite carols as Songs of the Day! So, in Choir practice today at Church we were singing gloria, and it made me think of Angels we Have Heard on High. One of my faves. So here it is and this version is just amazing in multi-lingual form!

Christmas Letter
12/21/2016, Day #356 of 2016, and the day was filled with end of semester tasks, the Division Christmas Party, and then, once home, working on the distribution of the Sherr Family Christmas Letter and Cards. I have to admit that Sarah does most of the work, she is very organized and gets the tasks all completed. We write the letter together, however, and we enjoy sharing our joys (and, at times, concerns) with our family and friends. SO, thanks to Sarah - they are all in the mail WHEW - and I found a song about Christmas letters that really resonates with me.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
On the 355th day of 2016, Christmas was in the air. Had a Christmas Lunch with colleagues at work, the Registrar's Suite is all decked out, a colleague visited us in a reindeer outfit, driving around town the lights are amazing. It's 12/20/216 and only five more days until Christmas. No wonder it's beginning to look a lot like it. Right, Johnny?

Santa Claus is Coming to Town
After a good day at work (had my emails under 200 all day!), on 12/19/16 was happy to get home at a pretty good time. And, on the 354th day of 2016, we watched Elf AND Christmas Vacation on TV! Great holiday family night. I love the end of Elf, when they sing about Santa coming and fill the sled with believer power. I still believe in Santa, I do. I think the spirit of Santa is in us as we are more friendly, more charitable, nicer during the holiday. Hope this feeling can spread to those who need it this holiday! Have Hope!

The First Noel
I knew 12/18/16 would be a great day. It is day #353 in 2016, and 353 is a palindromic day - the second to last one of the year! Children's Pageant at Church and Tuba Christmas plus more family holiday traditions, and the day went as about as well as I could have hoped. A great day to end the week, and to prepare me for the last work week of the calendar year. The Hymn of the Week is an easy one to pick for today. I love this hymn/carol, and I share it with you as the Song of the Day.

Christmas is Coming
It was a very busy day on 12/17/16. We spent the 352nd day of 2016 going from event to event and getting things done. Prepararations for Christmas in many of these cases. It's only a week until Christmas, and the impending events are exciting, but also tiring as well. Trying to get back on the Christmas song horse, I present to you the Muppets! I love this song, it reminds us of the need to be charitable, even when presented with impending opulence of an approaching holiday.

Do You Want to Build a Snowman?
Since I messed up and interrupted the string of Christmas songs yesterday, I will continue the interruption on Day #351 of 2016. 12/16/16 was Alexa and Anna's Snowball Dance at School. And, while there was not snow tonight, I hear it may come while we are sleeping. SO, for Emily, here is a Frozen Song about snow, since it is so cold! Enjoy!

Ice Ice Baby
The 350th day of 2016 was COLD in this part of the country. 12/15/16 had temps in the teens and, after the OPS winter concert, I was in the parking lot fascinated by the puddle that had iced over. 50s a few days ago and now ice, ice, baby! Brrrrrrrr

Santa Bring my Baby Back to Me
Sarah left very early on the morning of the 349th day of 2016 and she drove to Lebanon, PA to be with her grandmother on her 96th birthday (and while she was having hip surgery). It was strange to be away from Sarah during 12/14/16, a mid-week day, and I was worried about her and her grandmother for much of the day. And, the happiest I was today was when Sarah got home and I could give her a hug and be glad that all went well today. So, I would say that I got my Christmas Gift, 11 days early, when Sarah was returned back to us!

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Spent Day #348 of 2016 in a holiday mood. Started 12/13/16 at Christmas Carol with my project workteam, and then ended the workday by helping at the President's Christmas Party. Now trying furiously to catch up on emails, which seems impossible at the moment. (sigh). BUT, a highlight of today was the play, I love the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge into a person who cares about others and changes his life. Hoping for that transformation in the real world as well. At the end of the play, Scrooge is a merry gentleman....and I love this BNL version of this song!

What Child is This?
On the 347th day of 2016, I thought a lot about my kids. Having to be at work early today, I was not able to drop them off (THANKS, DAD, for doing so!) And I noticed that one change in my AM routine really made me miss them all day. Then I made up for that, on 12/12/16, by watching Alexa play in her basketball game and score her first points of the season. Then we attended a community meeting together and I was proud of her contributions there as well. Back home, we got to watch Anna's recording of the Lion King with my parents and I am so proud of her work in that show and then we had a slight mishap as she cut her hand (oops!) 12 stitches later, all will (eventually) be well. My children are such a large part of my life, and this is the Christmas Carol I think of when I think of the word "child." So it is perfect for the song of the day.

Angels We Have Heard on High
Music was a very important part of day #346 of 2016. And it all started at Church. And I knew 12/11/16 would be a good day (it was a GREAT day) when I heard the harpist during the Prelude. There is something angelic about the way a harp sounds! Speaking of angels, I love this Christmas Carol that I present to you as the Song of the Day / Hymn of the Week. I hope you all feel the angels in your life during this season!

Born in a Manger
In my Advent post for 12/10/16, I spoke about how I got to attend the Midwifery Completion Ceremony on the 345th day of 2016. I thought about how these students are with mothers when their babies come in to the world. I thought about the care they deliver and how they provide strength and, driving home, it made me think about the Christmas story. Who was Mary's midwife? Did she have one? I'd bet she did. I am going to guess it was the Innkeeper's wife....or daughter maybe. But, in any case, it made me think of Christmas songs about birth. And here is one, sung by Patti LaBelle.

Mary, Did You Know?
Day #343 of 2016 is here. Only two more palindromic days of the year remain, let's make the best of them. Had a long day at work on 12/8/2016, but some good meetings occurred. And, exhausted, Sarah and I made it to Choir rehearsal. No matter how tired, Choir always rejeuvenates me! Especially when preparing Advent Anthems and music for Christmas Eve. Tonight, for the song of the day, I leave you with this one. I love this song and loved singing it tonight in rehearsal. And then a different version came on the radio on the way home (just extra practice, I guess, because we sang along!)

12/7/2016 and it was a strange day for me, on the 342nd day of 2016, since I actually took a PTO day from work. I had Pearl Harbor on my mind all day today, however, remembering that fateful day, 75 years ago, and hoping that history does not repeat itself in the 21st Century. Since I am having fun with Christmas tunes these days, and to honor Hawaii on Pearl Harbor Day, I give you this Bing Crosby classing (featuring the Andrews Sisters). ALOHA!

I'm Gettin' Nuttin' For Christmas
12/5/2016, another long day at work and the 340th day of 2016 took me to post-work meetings as well. Then I arrived at home and my family. Thank Goodness. Tonight the girls were asking me what I want for Christmas. Frankly, I have almost everything I need, so I am struggling to get them a list. I do worry, however, if I do not come up with something good, I might end up like Ricky Zahnd (who? Yeah, I had to look it up, sorry!). :-D

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus
Great day on 12/4/2016. The 339th day of 2016 found us welcoming new members and experiencing Communtion at Old First this morning. I always appreciate the scriptures of John the Baptist Sunday and the expectation of the arrival that is foretold. I love, love, love Advent Hymns, and this one for the hymn of the week, song of the day, is one of my favorites. A Celtic version makes it even more nice to listen to. Energizes for the coming week, month, season. Enjoy!

Do They Know It's Christmas
It's day #336 of 2016. And 12/1/2016 is World AIDS Day. At Sarah's work, the Health Education Office had shirts commemorating the Day by stating "Be Positive." Some people on campus were upset by that slogan, but Sarah and I liked it. Of course, I am always trying to be positive. When we think about epidemics and other issues that are faced in other countries in this world, it is sometimes hard to see how we can be positive, but I posit that progress comes from hope and hope comes from positivity. So I will continue to try. As for the song of the day, staying in the Christmas Music theme, here is another song about issues across the ocean. It was poverty, not AIDS, that Band-Aid was trying to address, but I do like this song very much. And the video from VH-1 Pop Up Video has some interesting facts (and some jokes) as well. Enjoy and BE POSITIVE!

I Believe in Santa Claus
So, 11/29/16, was #GivingTuesday. I actually do not give any additionally on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving because I believe in giving every day, not just when the Internet tells me to do so! On the 334th day of 2016, I reflected on the culture of giving and hope that, with each Christmas, it can be fortified that much more. I guess it's because, just as Kenny and Dolly, I believe in Santa Claus and the giving nature embodied by the character so prominently featured during the season. Heard this song on the Holly XM station this morning and it HAD to be my song of the day!

We Need A Little Christmas
What a great numerical day it has been on 11/28/2016. Yes, today was the 333rd day of 2016. A pretty good day (which should be numerically expected). But, the best part was driving home from work. Not only because I was coming home, but as I drove home, I drove past all my neighbor's houses with amazing and awesome decorations. It uplifted my spirits after a long day. We need Christmas these days more than ever, these days. We need a little Christmas, we need a LOT.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
11/27/2016 was the 1st Sunday of Advent. I have been waiting for Advent, one of my favorite seasons of the year. And, the 332nd day of 2016 did not disappoint. Awesome service at Church, small trip to buy some needed pants for me (NOT at the mall, still avoiding the mall, if I can, during this season), decorating the house, catching up on work, football, and now early to bed - full week of work is ahead! Advent hymns are some of my favorites! And, this hymn of the week/song of the day, sung by Enya, is even that much more special. Hope your Advent started as well as mine!

Deck the Rooftop
So, on the 331st day of 2016 (11/26/16), the Sherr Family was invovled in a lot of holiday decorating. Still none at Chez Sherr, but at a friends' house and at the Church. Honestly, I did not do much, I am still really tired from a crazy month. So, while I rested, they worked, and in honor of their work, here is a Glee Christmas Song Mashup for our song of the day. The Christmas Can-Can
So Day #330 of 2016 was "Black Friday" but our family did not go out shopping today. No, on 11/25/16 we did not buy in (get it?) to the consumerism of the holiday season. We slept in, we cleaned the house to get ready for decorations, and we attended an amazing birthday party for a Band Member's dad. It was a great day. It was, for me, also the start of the Christmas Tie season and, yes, now we can listen to CHRISTMAS MUSIC. So, I warn, the rest of 2016's songs of the day will be heavily dominated by Christmas Music (which I love). But, to start, here is a song that, humerously, does address some of the issues with the holiday season. So, acknowledging them, but with excitement of this musical season, I give you this Can Can tonight.

Thanks for the Memory
On Thanksgiving, day #329 of 2016, I have so much for which to be thankful. And, as I get ready for bed on 11/24/16, I am thankful for my family, thankful for the time off to spend time at dinner, thankful for the people who prepared the feast tonight, thankful for a job I love, thankful for supportive friends, thankful for all that I have. And especially thankful that I am not out shopping tonight or, hopefully, tomorrow. So much better to create memories with my family. So, like Bob Hope, I am thankful.

St. Elmo's Fire
11/23/16, Day #328 of 2016, was an abbreivated day at work. Then it was time for the pre-family gathering haircut and then home to an evening with the family. A great way to start the Thanksgiving Break. As I was driving to and from picking up my girls from piano, I noticed the typical pre-Thanksgiving gatherings of friends from High School. Traditional Football games and the like. It made me think back to the reunion we had from my high school class last year at this time (30 years!) And it made me a bit sentimental. And, when I get sentimental, I think of this song from one of my favorite "old friends" movies. Great music, especially the counter melodies. Hope you are all with family or friends this holiday as well.

Hello
I was watching James Corden last night (yes, up late catching up on emails) and he stated that yesterday was International Hello Day. SO, I had already picked my song for yesterday, but I figured that, for Day #327 (three hundred plus three cubed!), I would pick a Hello song. So, throughout the day at work on 11/22/16, I tried to figure out which one I would use. And Lionel won! HELLO!

Blowing in the Wind
The wind was REALLY whipping on the 326th day of 2016. Driving to work on 11/21/16, I could see things just blowing. Sitting in the office, you could see the trees leaning back and forth in the gusts. So, as I went looking for a wind-related song, I hit the jackpot. A song about wind AND about the need for peace. I love Peter, Paul, and Mary, so I chose their version. ENJOY!

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come
11/20/16 was Day #325 of 2016. And we have officially entered Thanksgiving Week. Started off with a wonderful service at Church and we sang hymns of thanks as we made our pledges for 2017. I love church music, and this hymn I have chosen for the hymn of the week (song of the day) is one of my favorites. We did not sing it today, but I like it so much, here it is! Maybe the last non-Advent/Christmas hymn of the year. Yes, the Christmas Music Season starts on Friday (but NOT before!), but, tonight, we give Thanks!

The Way We Were
The 324th day of 2016 was a surreal day for me. 11/19/16 was a Saturday, so, lately, those have on the relaxing side. But, today was hectic, with two shows for Anna as well as a soccer game. We were booked end-to-end starting from Noon. But, the hecticness did not cause the surrealness for me. It was the finality of a few things. Alexa and her classmates in 9th grade, most likely, played their last game for the Oaklyn Soccer Club. Alexa has been playing Oaklyn Soccer for forever (I think 9-10 years) and I have really enjoyed the fact that she AND Anna have been able to play together for the last few seasons. And then Anna had her last two shows for The Lion King over at Colls Middle School. She has blossomed in this show and I have loved watching that - and now we have to wait until Fall 2017 for the next Colls MS Show. Time marches on and milestones are reached. It made me think of this song we sang at Graduation from Masterman. And, I know these events today were not scholarly graduations, but they were milestones nonetheless.

Mickey Mouse Club
11/18/16 was day #323 of 2016. I have to admit, for a palindromic day, the workday was a little rough. AM meeting, which was kinda long and I was hangry, followed by nice events and appointments, and then the worst phone-call of my professional career. But I had an amazing evening at the OMAYSC Gym Night and then an evening out with family. So, the day turned around! And, to add to the palindromic awesomeness, 88 years ago, the amazing Mickey Mouse made his debut (along side Minerva (Minnie)) in Steamboat Willie. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a Disney fan! Love the Mouse - enjoy his theme song!

Can You Feel the Love Tonight
A song from the Lion King was inevitable because, on the 322nd day of 2016, the Colls Middle School production opened. I volunteered backstage on 11/17/16 and so I heard the show, cannot wait to see the show on Saturday. So I already used Circle of Life and Hakuna Matata, so I picked this song because I DO want people to feel the love tonight. I felt love for Anna, she and her friends were great tonight. So, hoping you all felt the love in your own way.

We Didn't Start the Fire
So, I was determined, on the 321st day of 2016, to try to get back to my old self for a bit (I HAVE been maudlin for the past week or so) so, upon a suggestion from a friend, I returned to 80's music. So, on the way to work on 11/16/16, 80's on 8 was the radio channel in my van. And, as often is the case, the music spoke to me! This classic Billy Joel song came on, and it made me realize, yeah, things seem to be whackado in the world these days, but most times have had their issues. From Begin, Reagan, Palestine (Terror on the Airlines) to AIDS, Crack, Bernie Goetz (British Politician Sex) the issues seem to be overwhelming....so we must stay calm, continue to work towards good, and support each other! Goodnight everyone!

Fight Song
It's been a tough week. And the 320th day of 2016 was a long one. And I am tired. And, on 11/15/16, a week later. I am still a bit down. Someone told me today they want me to return to my old self and it remains to be seen if that will happen. But here is a step in possible recovery. Rachel Platten wrote this song. And it was used in the campaign this year, but more important is her quote about it. This is why I picked it for today's song of the day:
"When I wrote 'Fight Song,' I was in a particular low point. I needed to remind myself to not give up, that I still believed in myself and that I still had fight left,"
I still have fight left!

Werewolves of London
Everyone who knows my dad, knows he loves the moon. So, on Day #319 of 2016, the Super Beaver Moon is amazing, and makes me think of my dad. So I went over to his FB profile on 11/14/16 and, of course, he had an appropriate song (#ChipOffTheOlBlock). This Warren Zevon classic is perfect for tonight's moon and song of the evening.

Hallelujah
As I do most Sundays, I went to Old First Reformed UCC on the morning of the 318th day of 2016. Being born on 3/18, I should like the 318th day, and, all in all, 11/13/16 was a pretty good day for us. But I do admit to being emotional this morning when singing the impromptu anthem that we got together (this was supposed to be an "off-week" for the Choir) because I love this song, Leonard Cohen died this week, and SNL paid tribute to him by having "Hillary Clinton" play and sing this song. So, singing this morning not only made me think of the amazing Mr. Cohen, but also what could have been had things turned out differently on Tuesday. Spent much of the rest of the afternoon working on reports to bolster the efforts to support our students at Penn who have been a victim of some hate crimes. It's a crazy new "reality" in which we all now live, but I pledge to work towards peace and understanding as best I can. And I leave you with the recording of our Choir singing today. It's not as polished as many of the videos I have been posting, but I feel it's appropriate as our Hymn of the Week/Song of the Day. Goodnight, and may we all have a better week.

Safe and Sound
So, on day #317 of 2016 I spent a lot of time reflecting on the events on Penn's campus yesterday. 24 hours later, on 11/12/16, I am still worried about how the students on our campus feel after the horrible threats made to them on social media yesterday. One of the basic needs a human has is the need to feel safe and sound. I have to admit I am unsure of exactly what I need to do to help them feel safe, but I know something needs to be done. So I will be listening, praying, and figuring out how to do so. In the meantime, I dedicate this evening's song of the day to them.

Saber and Spurs March
11/11 is a really nice date, huh? 11/11/16 was Day #316 of 2016 and was also Veterans Day. I have many friends and family members who have served (or are still serving) in the military and I so appreciate the sacrifices that they (and their family members) have made in order for us to live in a safer and more secure Nation and World. To salute them, musically, with the song of the day, I needed to find a good Sousa March. So I picked this one, which is appropriately subtitled "The March of the American Cavalry." THANK YOU, VETS!

Love Will Find a Way
I am still a bit perturbed on the 315th day of 2016. 11/10/16 was a long day at work followed by a trip to the mall and I am only now sitting down to try to catch up on some emails. I am not sure I have anything else profound to say. Reading FB today in between meetings both uplifted me but also angered and saddened me as well. So, instead of trying to be poignant, I will share my second choice song from last night, which I heard on the way into work yesterday....and I hope it is correct.

Lotta Love
I have to admit, I was really tired, depressed, and sad on the 314th day of 2016. 11/9/2016 started off, at 2AM, watching the returns and going to bed thinking that the impossible had happened. And, I awoke this morning to find that it had. And I was grumpy today at work, many were. And it was really hard to be on Facebook today, but I did it and I did it without succumbing to anger or hate as a reaction to what I was seeing and feeling. And then, grumpily driving home (actually stuck in traffic) in a very rainy, slow rush hour, a friend suggested I listen to music to make me happy (I still had the news on from this morning). And, you know what? Sometimes God speaks through music (He often does). And, tonight was no exception. This Nicolette Larson song came on (I had always known this song, but only now know of Nicolette Larson) and her lyrics are perfect for tonight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80PTNnrwUO8
"It's gonna take a lotta love
To change the way things are.
It's gonna take a lotta love
Or we won't get too far
So if you look in my direction
And we don't see eye to eye,
My heart needs protection and so do I.
To change the way things are.
It's gonna take a lotta love
Or we won't get too far
So if you look in my direction
And we don't see eye to eye,
My heart needs protection and so do I.
It's gonna take a lotta love
To get us thru the night.
It's gonna take a lotta love
To make things work out right.
So if you are out there waitin'
I hope you show up soon,
'Cause my heart needs relating not solitude."
To get us thru the night.
It's gonna take a lotta love

So if you are out there waitin'
I hope you show up soon,
'Cause my heart needs relating not solitude."

It's the End of the World
Well, it was day #313 (palindromic karma, do not fail me now), and voter turnout on 11/8/16 seemed to be at record levels. But it does not seem to have been enough. I have no words. Just this REM song. Goodnight!

Come Monday
On the way to work on the 312th day of 2016, I was listening to the Bridge. Relaxing songs for stressful days (thank goodness the strike ended on 11/7/2016 and traffic should get better tomorrow). But, even without traffic, tomorrow will be a heavy day. But this song came on the radio and reminded me that things will be Ok in the future. Just need to sing "Come Wednesday" instead of Jimmy Buffet's real lyrics. Cannot wait for this "brown haze" to end....

I Sing a Song of the Saints of God
Day #311 of 2016 was 11/6/2016, and we recognized All Saints Day at Church this morning. It really got me thinking about the myriad of saints in my life, both the living saints and also the ones who have passed on but live in my heart, mind, and memory constantly. From my grandparents, to friends, to fellow congregants at Old First, there are many to remember on days like today. But, as I read the scripture this morning, as the lector, I could not help but remember Peter Brigham again. Peter is often on my mind at Old First, but, especially when I read scripture as he really took me under his wing and mentored me on the most effective ways of delivering the verses to people. He always reminded me to "slow down" and, today, when I was getting a little emotional (I always get nervous, no matter how many times I have done it), I heard him tell me to "slow down"..... so I DID!
So, this hymn of the week / song of the day is for Peter, and my grandparents, and my colleagues, and my friends and family who are guiding me daily, and with me always. I hope I can also be a saint to others:
"For the saints of God are just folk like me,
And I mean to be one too."

The Way You Do the Things You Do
I have come to really love Saturdays. And, on the 310th day of 2016, it was a relaxing one! Nothing on the docket for us except for a few errands for me and a few rehearsals for Anna. Then, we ended the evening of 11/5/2016 at a family dinner at Bahama Breeze. It was a really nice meal and we enjoyed the Island Music. So, for the song of the day, I give you a song from my favorite island-ish band, UB40.

Brave
11/4/2016, day #309 of 2016, ended another long week. I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend and hoping to both get some good sleep and get some work done (I NEED to catch up!) As I was running around this evening, this song came on the radio (no more Billy Joel channel, so I am listening to the Blend these days), and I really like. We all need to be Brave these days!

Sara
As the 308th day comes to an end, there really is not a specific song that needs to be used. So, on 11/3/2016, as I left the gas station (refilling for the first time under the new higher gas tax, which really was not that bad), this Fleetwood Mac song came on Eighties-On-Eight. It made me smile, it always does, songs that make me think of my amazing wife always do. <3

Let's Go Crazy
What a crazy evening of the 307th day of 2016. Sitiing at home, on 11/2/16, watching Game 7 of the World Series and this has been an amazing game. There really are no words, so I went searching for an appropriate song. Having used all of my baseball songs during the summer, I landed on this, another Prince Classic. Not only does this focus on the CRAZINESS of this game, it is the song that George and I used to pump ourselves up before our Levittown Softball League. Game's not over yet, but I wanted to post now, I have no idea what might happen!

Seven
November arrived on 11/1/16. The 306th day was a very wonderfully numeric day. 11/1 is a palindrome, my lunch bill with a friend was exactly equal for each of us, and the Odometer hit 70707 on my ride home, which, inverted is also LOLOL. That spoke to me and, so, here is my favorite song about my favorite number - SEVEN!

I Want Candy
As October 2016 comes to an end on 10/31/16, the 305th day reminded us that there are only two more months (and 61 days) left in the year. But, also, it is HALLOWEEN! Took the day off from work and was able to complete errands and be there to see the girls in their costumes and enjoy the town trick-or-treating with family, friends, and neighbors. Great day, I am sure I will pay for it at work tomorrow, but, for tonight, I am just going to enjoy this Bow Wow Wow ditty.

A Mighty Fortress is our God
Reformation Sunday was the 304th Day of 2016. A nice church service started off 10/30/16. And Sarah and I got to play brass for hymns. So, for the hymn of the week, song of the day, I give you one of my favorite hymns... I know some people think it is too old of a chestnut, but, then again, so am I!

Alma Mater (of the University of Pennsylvania)
10/29/2016 was Homecoming on Penn's Campus. SO, after mornng erranfs and an early afternoon soccer game for the girls, we headed to campus on the 303rd day of 2016. The palindromic good karma was in full force (even had a palindrome odometer post on my FB wall to start my day!) and we had an amazing afternoon and evening. Homecoming is a strange day for me because, on campus almost every day aready, it's not much like coming home for me. But it was great to see all of those who came back home and to share the amazing day with them. As I head to bed earlier than usual on a Saturday (SNL is a rerun, whew!), I give you, as the song of the day, the Alma Mater of the institution we all share love for, Penn!

Young at Heart
Day #301, a rainy, cool day. 10/27/16 was comprised of a lot of meetings at work and then a modified evening schedule (as our Halloween Hay Ride got cancelled due to weather). So I went to Choir, instead, and, I admit, I was a bit immature. Halloween brings that out in me. The kid. I have been accused, at times, including by my own self, of still being a 12-year old.....I have a mug on my desk that says, "You're only young once, but you can be immature forever." Even my choice to stay on the campus of my college days could be viewed at grasping at youth. But, it's not youth I need. Just need to stay young at heart, that is why I love so many kid-based activities and throw myself into the youth sports and education worlds....Michael Buble agrees as well.

I Can See Clearly Now
DAY #300 of 2016. 10/26/2016 was another day of meetings at work. But, two things also happened today that have not happened in a LONG time. First, the Cubs won their first World Series win since 1945....71 years ago. But, more importantly, I got my first pairs of new glasses in five years! And, since I am getting older and my eyes are following, they are, for the first time, progressive lenses (no, I could NOT do bifocals). So, for the first time, in a long time, I can see clearly (now)....right, Jimmy Cliff??

Prelude / Angry Young Man
We're all the way to day #298 of 2016. 10/24/2016 was a return to Penn Campus for me, returning to the work-site from a few days in NYC and then a nice weekend. And a new employee started today and it, again, made me think of my advancing role at work and how I have moved from the young, upstart staffer to the grizzled old veteran. I think I like this new role, but I do remember when I was an upstart, cocky, new employee - some would say an angry, young man. So I will let Billy sing about it (still enjoying the Billy Joel XM channel!)

10/23/2016 - Day #297 of 2016 and a really nice day chilling out (literally and figuratively - the temps have really been dropping...) with the family. We sang this hymn at Church this morning and I got goosebumps, so I feel it needs to be the Hymn of the Week/Song of the Day.

Magic
We had a lot going on for 10/22/2016. Field Hockey Coin Drop, Field Hockey, Soccer Game, Pumpkin Carving Party, Wedding, and errands to boot! But it all happened on the 296th day of 2016. All things fell in place and we were even on time for everything. We all enjoyed the different events we had and we got to see another amazing couple get married! Maybe it's because I was with Greer at the wedding, or maybe it's because the Cars were on the radio driving to the wedding, or maybe it's because the Cubs are heading to the World Series for the first time in 71 years (to face the team in the AL with the longest championship drought), or maybe it's because Penn State blocked a FG and ran it back to beat Ohio State in a major upset... in any case, this is the song choice for today! Magical!

Return to Sender
OK, I blame the frenetic pace of this week, but I got off numbering for the days of the year. I fixed yesterday, when I realized 10/21/16 is the 295th day of 2016. But I cannot fix my train experience and the karma from palindromic days....so I will leave it as is, for now, and focus on today. I returned to my hometown today, leaving NYC in the rearview mirror of the Amtrak train. So happy to be back home. Having used a lot of home-themed songs and train-songs this week, I am going to, instead, focus on this Elvis song.

New York State of Mind
I spent the entirety of the 294th day in New York City. I am not sure, in my 47+ years, that I have ever done this....wow. 10/20/2016 was the second day of my Ivy+ Registrars meeting and I have to say I love having a group of colleagues who have the same issues, struggles, and most importantly, sense of work humor that I do! Since I have now spent the longest time in NYC, I guess this Billy Joel song is appropriate!

Anyone who perused my FB News Feed today saw that, on the 292nd day of 2016, I got on the Amtrak Train (first time in THIRTY years) and went to New York City. I am glad for the good karma of the palindromic number on 10/19/16 as it was a great trip and a great first day of the Meeting. Summer Highland Falls
Day #291 started off with the Billy Joel Channel during my commute. And 10/18/16 was much warmer than it should be in mid-October (#ClimateChange). It felt like Summer out there today. AND, given that this awesome Billy song came on during the warm commute and also has the word Summer in it, it had to be the Song of the Day. It's one of my favorites of his....and always reminds me of Penn Dance Choreography. Calming me even more on a warm summerish Fall day.

Streets of Philadelphia
The 291st day of 2016 was both 10/17/2016 and also was National Boss' Day. We did not celebrate this at work, and for that, I am a bit sad. But, let's focus on a different Boss - and focus on a Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen song. Already having used my favorite (Glory Days), I give you this one from the movie Philadelphia. Not because I relate to the melcholy lyrics, but because I love the streets of Philadelphia and I love the Boss.

All God's Critters Got A Place in the Choir
Sunday 10/16/16 was not only the 289th day of 2016, but it was also one of my favorite days at Church. The Blessing of the Animals was amazing, not only because it was beautiful weather for an outside service, not only because we got to take Skylar and Talia to Church, so our entire nuclear family was represented, but also because we were reminded that this "dog eat dog" world that we live in should be more of a "dog love dog" world (and I love that as I tried to type "dog" I kept typing "god" (twice) - hmmmmmmmm). And, we were also reminded about our responsibility to care for this Earth on which we live. I pray that we, as a society, do better. We have to. For ourselves and for our environment. So, although this is not a conventional hymn, per se. We sang it today during the service, so I take liberty to count this Bill Staines classic as our hymn of the week, song of he day!

Some days the choices for song of the day just flow. 10/15/2016 was not one of those days. I mean, the 289th day of 2016 was a pretty good day. It was filled with the usual Saturday errands, family activities, and a really nice family dinner. But my song muse was failing me.....it's the 15th of October....a year ago we were implementing a huge project at work. Should it be an anniversary song? Should it be a song about being part of an amazing team, then AND now? Wasn't feeling it. So, I thought, what about The Ides of October....nothing. BUT, I did find a song I like from the group Ides of March! So this is the song of the day!

You've got a Friend
10/14/2016 was a double gross day (Day #288, get it??). The day itself was not gross at all. Good meetings at work, end of the day Presidential Presentation for Penn's Family Weekend (inspiring!)
Then, I rushed home, a bit stressed because I had not prepared well for OMAYSC's first Gym Night of the year. I was worried that my lack of preparation would reduce the value of the event for the kids and the community. BUT, I should not have worried. My colleagues on the OMAYSC Board were on top of details, the School Admin had ensured all the students and parents were aware of the event. The event went off, and well! I need to remain focused on the fact that it is best, in life, to realize those around you who can help you make life better. I am blessed to have such great friends!

Honesty
Yesterday at work ended on a bit of a downer as my colleagues informed me that a man with a bike rack on the back of his car had backed into my van. SO, I spent the first hour of 10/13/16 at Ernie's Auto Body getting an estimate. My family has been going to Ernie's since I was knee high to a grasshopper. And today's quote was reasonable and that made the 287th day of 2016 start off on a much better note. And then I texted the guy (who left a note) and he was happy with the reasonable quote and we are going to take care of this nice and friendly-like. See what can happen when honesty takes precedence and human decency is more important than worrying only about self-serving actions. It gave me a little more faith in humanity and, these days, I need that. Billy Joel sang a song about honesty, and so I chose that as our Song of the Day for today!

Teddy Bear
I cannot believe we have gotten to Day #286 of 2016 and I've only used two Elvis songs (and one was him singing a hymn!) But, searching for inspiration on 10/12/16, I found out that today is "National Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day." Now, I did not know this until now, so I did NOT bring a teddy bear to work today, but, I will leave you this evening with this Elvis song of the day!

On A Bicycle Built For Two
10/11/16, the 285th day of 2016. That means that there are 81 days remaining in 2016....10/11 is also the day (in 1935) that my maternal grandparents were wed. Aaron Bechtel and Anne Splaver were married at the Courthouse and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1944 (9 years later), Bonnie Lee was born. She chose to transfer to Penn (from Ursinus), met David Sherr (in Houston Hall), and BOOM, the Sherr Family was started! Thank goodness for all the decisions made that led to my wonderful life that I now have! And, 9 years squared is 81. And today would have been Aaron and Anne's 81st anniversary (they were married 65 years when my grandmom passed away - 65!!!). 81 days left in 2016 on the 81st anniversary...I am in a numerical nirvana. And SO, not knowing what their actual wedding song was (if they indeed had one), I will use this song, from Nat King Cole, that my mom says Grandpop sang to Grandmom all the time. It's not Unforgettable, but the love and devotion they showed to each other, the role models they set for dedication to family and work ethic, certainly are unforgettable to me!

Summer of '69
If you look on my FB profile, you will see that the 284th day ended with an amazing, palindromic odometer reading. Yes, 10/10/16 ended with the last palindrome in the 69,000 mileage range. 1969 is the year in which I was born and, in a meeting at work, we checked the 1969 academic catalog for an archival exercise. SO, I think I will pick this Bryan Adams song as the song of the day, even though it is no longer summer. At least I am watching baseball as I post this.

Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer
Day #283 was a busy Sunday. 10/9/2016 started with a really nice morning at Church, and then we went to Penn (Field Hockey win!), went on a hay ride, had a great dinner with friends, and then came home. The evening had a little different tone as we watched The Debate II with most of the rest of the country. Again, not going on a rant, but man we, as a country, need some guidance. And, since this hymn was sung this morning in church and I really like it (and the tune!), here we have the hymn of the week!

Aint No Way to Treat a Lady
10/8/2016 was Day #282 of 2016. A palindromic day is a good numerical day and that usually translates into a day filled with good vibes. Today was not an exception. I was allowed to sleep in late (thank you Sarah!) and after a long few weeks at work, that extra rest was welcomed. Then a great lunch with my District 13 umpire crew and spent the evening relaxing at home with my family. A great day, yes, but that is not what is inspiring my song choice for today. Throughout today, I kept having to hear about comments made that denigrated women. I am trying not to let politics get me down, but, these days, it has not been easy. I will not go on a rant about any of my personal opinions, but I WILL say that this Helen Reddy classic from the 70s pretty much sums up my feelings.

Smile
10/7/16 is, according to Facebook, World Smile Day. SO, I already used my favorite smile-related song (from Annie) a while ago, so I went looking, on the 281st day of 2016, for more smile songs. And I landed on MANY versions of this one, choosing to use the Harry Connick, Jr. version. NOW, I am not feeling as bad as is intimated in this song, but, in a week where I kept discussing what I have learned from my foibles and failures AND having been told, multiple times, that positive attitude is a quality that has helped me in all aspects of my life, I will use this song as the song of the day and I will SMILE!

Doctor! Doctor!
10/6/2016 is day #280 of 2016..man, we are hurling towards the end of the year and time seems to be hard to come by. Today was, as usual, a frenetic day filled with meetings and tasks (and email), but it was great to end the day with a celebration of the 25-Year Club at Penn. I saw a LOT of long time friends, but also saw some GREAT former colleagues who have retired, but come back for this event. But nothing from Penn is making the song of the day. Because, today is the 6-year anniversary of one of the most amazing sports memories of my life. Now, being in CBP when the Phils won the WS was amazing, BUT, being in the stands when Doc Halliday threw his playoff no-hitter. I will always be indebted to Dr. Neil who sold me the tickets and will always have the connection with Greer Cheeseman in regard to this memory. SO, in honor of Doc...here is an 80s classic from the Thompson Twins!

10/5/2016 is the 279th day of 2016 AND is National Do Something Nice Day. I would like to think that EVERY day should be do something nice day! And, although I was not aware of this day, I hope that I lived up to its purpose today. And, in honor of being nice, I give you this Tim McGraw classic.

Day #277 of 2016 starts the Year 5777 for my Jewish friends and family. So, on 10/3/2016, I wish everyone L'Shana Tovah and hope and pray that your year is prosperous and peaceful! And, here is a neat kids song that I found - not in the usual style of my songs of the day, but I LIKE it!

All Things Bright and Beautiful
Day #276 of 2016 may be notable because it might have been the last day I will have spent at Fellowship Farm. I have been going to FF for Leadership Weekends for the better part of two decades. But, alas, FF is closing, so we here, and 10/2/2016 was the last day of this Fall's Retreat. I certainly hope that this important part of history is preserved by whomever buys the land and buildings! And I awoke on World Communion Sunday without having the opportunity to go to church. So I spent time just staring at the beautiful nature of the farm....amazed at God's creation. The beauty and the calmness of it all. And so this is today's song, and this week's hymn.

Day #2 of Leadership Weekend was also Day #275 of 2016. And the morning of 10/1/2016 found me lecturing and facilitating on the MBTI. I love talking with students about the MBTI and, as my favorite preference scale is Thinking/Feeling, in honor of my strong "F", I give you this Andy Williams classic!

Following the Leader
Day #274 was a day of Firsts and Lasts. 9/30/16 was the last day of a long, long month at work. BUT the first day for our new Deputy Registrar. It is also the first evening of Leadership Werekend, but the last time, perhaps, it will be offered at Fellowship Farm. So as I lie here in darkness (man it gets dark in the woods), I think of all the students I have facilitated for here at FF and all of the amazing colleagues with which I have staffed this retreat. And this Peter Pan song comes to mind.

Blessed
On a cold rainy Fall day, on 9/29/2016, I felt blessed. Why did I feel this way on the 273rd day of 2016? Well, I spent a lot of the evening thinking how lucky I am to have the kids that I have. Alexa got varsity time in the Field Hockey game again today, a testament to her hard work this season. And she manages all of this while doing well in school and being a decent teen (most of the time). And Anna stepped out of her comfort zone and will be in the ensemble of the Lion King play at the Collingswood musical. And she is also doing amazing things in school and I love her art. I am just so lucky and blessed. And, although Elton was singing this about impending kids, I will extrapolate it to the kids I have now.

Cherish
We have reached the middle of the last week of September. 9/28/16 was a very autumnal day, cool, with showers. And it was also day #272 of 2016. A palidromic day that foretold a good day. And, for the most part, it was a good deal. There were a few setbacks, but we will work through those, as we always do. Got home in time to eat dinner with my family and reflect, together, on this autumnal cool day. Cool. Like Kool and the Gang. And, like Kool and the Gang, I am cherishing what I have tonight.

Hakuna Matata
Day #271 of 2016 was another long day at work! Good day, but still catching up, once again. But, we did take a break from things this evening to watch the Lion King. Anna has a tryout for the Middle School Play tomorrow and they are doing the Lion King! Such great music in these older Disney movies! With all the stresses in our lives these days, it was good to sit back and think, "Hakuna Matata!" NO WORRIES!

After a long day packed with meetings from 9AM - 8:30PM (not all at work, but MAN did the email back up today), we ended the 270th day in front of the TV, watching the 9/26/16 Debate with the 2016 Presidential Candidates. Not much to say that has not already been said (sigh)....but needless to say, I am going to stick with Brittney and be #Stronger.

It is Well (With My Soul)
Day #269 started off (as most Sundays do) at Old First Reformed UCC. And Pastor Michael preached on 9/25/2016 about loving his congregation (we love you too!!!) BUT, more importantly, we sang one of my favorite hymns, so it was a shoe-in to be the Hymn of the Week/Song of the Day. It is also apropos of how I feel these days....with all the tragedy in the news, the hate filled political scene, stresses in our lives, etc.....it is good to think about our souls....and being well. PEACE!

Band on the Run
It finally felt like Fall on the 268th day of 2016. And 9/24/16 was filled with Fall sports (FH Practice and Soccer Game) and then some errands and then a Fall tradition - the Collingswood Band Bash. So I was trying to think of songs with the word "band" in them and this is the one I came up with. I really like this song and, with fewer than 100 days left in this song-of-the-day experience, I really want to get songs I really like in the queue! Hope you like this one too!

Sugar
Spent most of 9/23/16, Day #267 of 2016, in a Management Retreat for work. Although I was not sure how it would go, it went excellently and I am feeling really good about the work we did. Had to run right to OPS for the PTA Ice Cream Social. I love this event and I love selling the tickets and getting to say hi to everyone who comes in! I guess this fits my DiSC profile, huh?? Well, this also meant that I had dessert (nice bowl of ice cream!) before I ate anything for dinner.....tackling emails with SUGAR running through my veins! Right, Archies??

Summer Breeze
Day #266 which means only 100 days left in 2016!!!! 9/22/2016 was another long day of meetings at work but it was also the first day of Autumn. Now, thanks to global warming, it was still "too hot" today and looks to be even hotter (88 degrees) tomorrow. But, driving home, with the windows down, I was enjoying the breezes and the air and the smell of Fall which is coming. Summer breezes....the jasmine of my mind.....song of the day.......goodnight!

Give Peace a Chance
9/21/2016 - Day #265 of 2016. And it is International Peace Day today. What more needs to be said? How can one go wrong with peace? Nobody can argue that we need more peace in our daily lives, in our communities, in this country, and in the World. The news online and in other forms of media certainly is filled with war, hate, fear, and turmoil. And the answer to all of these issues is peace. So, tonight, all I am saying, is GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!! And I like that Lennon released this song in 1969, and I was born in 1969....so, tonight, this is my spirit song, as well as the song of the day! PEACE everyone! Peace out!

Sent Forth by God's Blessing
9/18/2016 was the 262nd day of 2016. Ahhhh, yes, a palindromic day that was, as they often are, an amazing one. Spent the day with service on my mind. Morning started with the Oaklyn 5K Color Run and I was amazed by the dedication of all of the planners, volunteers, participants, sponsors, and spectators of the event. All gathering together to make a wonderful event that raised funds for programs so vital to our community and our youth. Then, after a brief break, we cooked at the Oaklyn Town Picnic. I LOVE serving at this event, and love cooking with Sarah and Kathy and Anna and the other members of the Oaklyn Civic Association. It was a wonderful event and the community came together. AND I got to sing Happy Birthday to a really good friend of mine as well. SO, as I sit here tonight, trying to find an appropriate hymn on a Sunday I was not able to make it to church services, this song came into my head. It is an amazing hymn about being sent forth into the world, with God's blessings and strength to do good works. And we did good works today. And I got to see other do good works as well. And we celebrated those in the community who also do good works. So, good works and service abounded on this day, so I leave you with this hymn. And, one last thing about this hymn, it makes me smile EVERY time I hear it because it is set to the tune of Ash Grove, and my mother sang that song to me when I was young. Another reason this is the song for tonight.

Let There Be Peace on Earth
9/17/16 was day #261 of 2016. It was also the evening of Anna's Concert for Peace at the Kimmel Center. It was inspiring to see all of those young musicians. But it was even more inspiring to hear the message of using music to promote peace in this world. To hear how music has saved people from harm and has inspired others to do good. Given the messages in the media and on the Internet we have been seeing these days, it was refreshing to have this message of music and peace. And I loved the song that ended the concert. All of the performers sang together, on stage, with the audience singing along as well. It's a message I think we can all hope for. Peace on Earth!

I Fought the Law
On the 260th day of 2016, we got another good piece of mail. Yesterday, we got the van's title, on 9/16/16, we got a notice that a parking ticket I had disputed had been dismissed! After a long day at work (another 12-hour day!), it made me smile and I needed it. Because, as in this 60's classic, I fought the law, but this time, we won!

Baby You Can Drive My Car
A lot to enjoy on Day #259 of 2016. 9/15/2016 was comprised of work meetings (good ones), TBT pictures on FB, Back to School Night at OPS (always fun), watching Alexa play (her team won 2-0) in the JV FH game, and hanging out at Philly's Phatties for the Colls Girls Soccer Fundraiser. Add to that, amidst the bills and junk mail, we got a mailing from Toyota. It is the title to our minivan. YES, Brenna is 5-years old and PAID OFF. SO, Beep Beep, YEAH! Thank You, Beatles!

Food Glorious Food
Day #258 was another long day at work (yes, still catching up on emails at this late hour!) So I, again, went the easy way and looked up the National ___ Day. Well, guess what? 9/14/16 is National Eat a Hoagie Day as well as National Creme Filled Donut Day. I also had lunch with a good friend and colleague today, so let's focus on..... FOOD! One look at me and you know I love food. So I looked for a food related song. AND, since it is also the birthday of the PGC Director, Josh Glassman, let's pick a food show tune! OLIVER!

Mighty Quinn
After another day of meetings at work on the 257th day of 2016, I found myself at Citizens Bank Park watching the Phillies (probably for the last time this season). Anna and I had tickets, on 9/13/16, in the Hall of Fame Club (Thanks Again, Dr. Kramer!) And the best part was, as the game progressed, Anna insisted that we would stay for every inning, even if the game went extra innings. This is progress from the little girl who would only last about 2 innings before we had to go to the Phun Zone, get ice cream, and then get pestered about when we were leaving. And, although the game was a loss for the Phils (sigh), we had a great time and we enjoyed watching one of the newst Phillies, Roman Quinn. Quinn is playing like a young player who wants to stay in the majors! And his energy was fun to watch. And, if not for the blown save from Gomez, he would have scored the winning run in the Bottom of the 8th. Rooting for Quinn made me think of this 60s classic, so it's the Song of the Day.

You Raise Me Up
After an emotional September 11th, it was time to return to work on the 256th day of 2016. 9/12/16 was a long day of work, meetings, Band rehearsal, and then a Church meeting. Exhausting day, but filled with great times and good work. Then I looked it up and found out that 9/12 is also the National Day of Encouragement. And that made me think. I would not be anywhere I am now without all of the encouragement I have received. From my parents, from my family, from my wife and kids, from my Work Study supervisors, from my Church family, from my mentors, from my friends, from my co-workers, from my colleagues, from my advisees, from everyone that is meaningful in my life. I am so appreciative of the encouragement I have received and continue to receive. I only have one message for all of you (besides the gratitude) and that is YOU LIFT ME UP! Cue the Grobanator.

How Great Thou Art
On the 15th anniversary of 9-11, I needed a hymn of the week that was both somber and uplifting. Somber, because I spent most of the 255th day of 2016 reflecting on the losses suffered on 9/11/2001. And, on 9/11/2016, I both realized how lucky I am and was for the graces that protected the ones most close to me on 9-11. But I also grieved with many about the losses we ALL suffered and the even more loss experienced by some. I HAVE to believe that things will get better, even if the current events on the news and the Internet are trying to tell me otherwise. I HAVE to have faith that, somehow, the World will start to turn from War and Hate towards more Peace and Love. So, for this week's hymn, and tonight's song of the day, I have chosen a song that has both hope and solemnity. Heal, World, Heal.

Circle of Life
It was another scorcher on the 254th day of 2016. Because, on 9/10/16, after watching Alexa's FH game (I have to admit I cheated and watched from the van with AC), we attended the First Anniversary for the daughter of a long time friend and colleague. And, as we sat there, I realized that I met my friend (and colleague) while working my Work Study job, Freshman year. And she was pregnant with her daughter (the one who's anniversary we were celebrating). And in the ensuing years, my friend and her husband, and their daughter, have watched Alexa and Anna many times. And today, I sat, poolside, and watched Alexa and Anna play with little kids. The same way THEY were played with in the pool by teenagers. It made me think how things are progressing, time is flying, and the sittees are becoming the sitters....and we celebrate marriages and babies and promotions and, well, it's overwhelming sometimes, this Circle of Life. So the only song I could think of was Elton John's classing from the Lion King. Happy for my part in this circle, but somedays I wish it would rotate a bit slower.... :-)

Sweet Dreams
Day #253 caps the end of an exhausting week. Another 12-hour day at work on 9/9/16 (9A - 9P this time) and I am so ready for bed. To sleep, perchance to dream. Sweet Dreams.....right Annie?

Still Crazy, After All These Years
9/8/16 was day #252 of 2016. Given that it was a palindromic day, I was looking forward to it being great. Now, it was really packed with meetings (and, here I sit, reading backlogged emails again late into the night), but one of the meetings was a tour of the New College House, and another was a really good advising session. And I got to reminisce with a colleague about my history at Penn and she shared her history too. And these remembrances were fitting on this day, my second anniversary at SRFS, and thinking back to 9/4/2016 (Sunday, my THIRTIETH anniversary at Penn!) Night was capped off with Choir Rehearsal, singing with folks I have been singing with for almost 20 years! After all this time, still going strong. Still crazy, after all these years. Sing it, Paul!

Oh Sherrie
OK, I admit it, some days, I take the easy way out with the Song of the Day choice. On the 251st day, after spending 8AM - 8PM working on 9/7/16, I needed to have an easy choice. Still working on email, but posting now so I can get right to bed. Happy to have been told that today is a special mathematical day (9 + 7 = 16, 9/7/16), but also happy to realize that today is the birthday of my good friend, Sherry. Yes, not Sherrie, but SHERRY, but, tonight, we will agree to not care about spelling and enjoy a little Steve Perry!

Back in Time
So we have come to day #250 of 2016. And 9/6/2016 was the last First Day of School at OPS for Alexa. Last year we will have Alexa and Anna in the same school for a while. Lots of First Day of School pics on FB today, and a lot of comparative pics with some from a year ago, some from YEARS ago. I love these moments in time, frozen by social media and available for review and enjoyment. It really takes me Back in Time, right Huey?

Look for the Union Label
Labor Day Weekend, since I have been dating/married to Sarah, has always meant Family Picnics. And, on 9/5/2016, this was still the case. On the 249th day of 2016, we had our second family picnic, this time on the Weaver side. And, sitting here at home now, after an amazing weekend filled with family, food, and fun, I am perusing FB and seeing people reminding us of the TRUE meaning of Labor Day. So, I thought I would find a union-based song for the Song of the Day. Unions have a strong history in my family tree, even if not now in present time. My grandfather, Aaron Bechtel, was a union organizer at the Post Office. And my parents raised me, in the 70s, with pro-worker, pro-fairness values, and (although I may not have realized it then) songs. SO, I was very pleased to find this medley of songs from an artist of whom I was previously not aware (Natalie Douglas) and, not only do they speak to the real meaning of Labor Day, but they also remind me of the music of 911 S. 47th Street, which connects me back to another part of my tree, not the one(s) with which we have been spending the weekend. SO, although there is a brief talking intro, I hope you enjoy these songs, and I hope you can take some time and think of the people who went before us, fighting for the rights (like the 40-hour work week) that we all take for granted today.

Blessed Be The Tie
Day #248 of 2016 found us in York, PA. 9/4/16 was the Annual Walters Labor Day Seafood picnic. As always there were crabs and shrimp and other yummy food. But, more importantly, there was family. Old and new (new baby, new cousin) gathered together and had a wonderful time. Therefore I wanted to find a hymn appropriate for Song of the Day/Hymn of the Week and decided on Blessed Be the Ties that Bind. Searching, I found this adaptation and I really like it. I love family time, but there are other ties to discuss tonight as well. This is the 30th anniversary of my arrival on Penn's Campus as well! Another family for me. So I hope you feel the ties that bind you to love that I have found in my family and work lives!!

Riders On the Storm
The Saturday of Labor Day Weekend is always a combination of recreation and work. The 247th day of 2016 was no exception as we spent 9/3/2016 doing various activities of work and plan. First the Snack Stand cleanup (a LOT of work), then the girls went to the pool while Sarah and I watched College Football (play), then we spent the evening together doing errands, watching TV, and I got through some emails (combo work and play). All through it, we kept getting reminders of the impending tropical storm, whether it be from the news alerts on the TV, to the sounds of the increasing breeze....so, tonight, as we await the storm's arrival, I give you this Doors classic as the Song of the Day!

Blueberry Hill
9/216 was day #246 of 2016 and the end of a long week as classes began at Penn, NSO continued, and preparations for our own Fall activities started to ramp up. Pretty tired after working all day and trying to catch up on back emails....will be working this weekend to clear out the queue. So, as I totter off to bed, I noticed that today was National College Colors Day, but I used The Red and Blue on Monday for Convocation, so I checked to see what other days it also might be. And I settled on National Blueberry Popsicle Day (WHAT??) But Blueberry made me think of Fats Domino and this classic. Posting this while watching Steven Colbert from the Ed Sullivan Theater makes it even more of a connection.

Greatest Love Of All
9/1/2016, the first day of September 2016 and the 245th day of 2016. Rainy morning, humid afternoon, but getting nicer and cool this evening. Spent the evening after work with the parents of Alexa's class, starting plans for their last year at Oaklyn Public School. I love planning events for kids, they are awesome. As Whitney sang, they are the future. Hope they feel our love, like in this song!

Brown Eyed Girl
On the 244th Day of 1976, 1 month and 27 days after the USA turned 200, Sarah Jayne Sherr was born. So, on the 244th day of 2016, 8/31/16, Sarah turned 40. Even better, on 8/31/94, Sarah moved in to Penn, and was in 3401 Walnut getting her first PennCard. I was on the other side of the suite wall, in the Dining Office, selling mealplans to students. This marks the first day we were in the same place at the same time, even if neither of us were aware. How fitting that today was the Intro Meeting of the Penn Band. It was joining the Penn Band that brought Sarah and me together, and the rest was love and history. Great ending to the hottest month in August's history and on to the Fall and the new school years and more of our wonderful lives together. So happy to be with my "brown eyed girl" And, here's Van Morrison to sing about it! <3

Glory Days
We continued celebrating Sarah's impending 40th birthday on Day #243 of 2016. 8/30/16 was the last game of the season for which we have 4 seats, so we can go as a family. Still have a few games for a parent and a kid to attend :-). We had a really nice evening, even if the Phils lost (sigh). We did get to see the bell ring on a homerun from Ryan Howard. Always good to see him do well. Last member of the 2008 Championship Team who remains. It reminded me of the Glory Days of the Phillies' seasons and that reminded me of this classic from Bruce!

The Red and Blue
Ahhh, New Student Orientation was in full force on the 242nd day of 2016. Yes, 8/29/16 was School Based NSO, Registrar Office was buzzing with requests, AND the evening ended with Convocation on College Green, an amazing way to start the Fall semester. So, I am exhausted tonight and the first day of classes is tomorrow, so I leave you with the obvious choice for the Song of the Day! The Penn Band, playing the Red and Blue! HOORAH!

Be Still My Soul (In You I Rest)
So, 8/28/2016 started, as most Sundays do, in Church. And, on the 241st day of 2016, one of the hymns was to the tune of Finlandia. Which is funny because, just yesterday, Sarah and I were discussing my favorite classical music, and Finlandia tops the list. So, at the end of a restful (but also busy) weekend, and at the start of an intense and exciting and busy week, I love it that the Hymn of the Week (and, thus, Song of the Day) is titled: Be Still My Soul. With all that is going on, at work, at Home, in my Family, and in the World, it is a good reminder that our souls need care. And we should try, at least for a little time each day, to still our soul and meditate. Hopefully, you can also find time for your souls to be still as well.

In Your Room
On the 240th day of 2016 we celebrated (early) Sarah's 40th and had a great night out with friends. I wish I could say that, on 8/27/16, we Escaped the Room, but we did not....but we enjoyed it immensely and, for tonight's song, I was looking for a room-themed song, and I love the 80s...and the Bangles....so enjoy!

Who Let the Dogs Out?
The 239th day of 2016 was not just the first day of NSO 2016 on Penn's campus, but 8/26/16 is also National Dog Day! We love our dog Skylar, so this song of the day goes out to her! WOOF!

One Call Away
The 238th day of 2016 was a red letter day for me. I sat, on 8/25/2016, on my first panel at the Parents NSO Event. On the stage on Irvine Auditorium, talking to parents, right before the start of my 31st Fall semester at Penn! I was nervous, I admit, but I had a great time. And I realized that all of the themes were similar, resources are available for students, for parents, for alumni, and all you have to do is reach out and use them. SO, basically, we are only One Call Away. And I have been trying to find an excuse to use this Charlie Puth song all year! I love it!

I Like To Move It
8/24/16 was the first official Move-In Day for the Class of 2020. And, yes, on the 237th day of 2016, I WAS struck by the realization that Alexa is in the H.S. Class of 2020 and, soon after the students who were moving in today get to Commencement (it happens faster than you'd think), Alexa and her class will graduate from High School <GULP>. Another consideration for a song of the day that celebrates that passage of time, but feeling that this would be too melancholy of a theme, I will stick to this song and video from Madagascar, instead. If I hold on to animation movies, maybe the kids will stay younger longer.

Ride Like the Wind
Well, on the 236th day of 2016, I learned something new again. 8/23/16 is National Ride the Wind Day. Celebrating a feat of flight (coincidentally right after the Rio Olympics where Brazil kept celebrating flight as well!). But, tonight, after a day at work preparing for the NSO Move in the next two days, I am focusing on the Best New Artist of 1979, Christopher Cross - gotta like this song, a precursor to the amazing 80s decade of music!

Time After Time
The start of the week was the 235th day of 2016 and 8/22/16 was a day filled with many meetings and many emails. But, as you can see on my FB page, I was struck this morning by my FB Memory notification. A 10-year old picture of Anna and Alexa really got me thinking about how much has changed in the past 10 years. Time...what a construct...it seems to move so fast at times, and so slow at others. Driving in to work, there were a bunch of songs on the Bridge (alternative to 80s this AM) dealing with time. So, I wanted a time related song for today. I used Time Passages for my dad's bday, so here is a Cindi Lauper classic.

Wide, Wide as the Ocean
Marine Science was, once again, on our minds on the 234th day of 2016. Because, on 8/21/2016 we got to go on the Whale/Dolphin Watch we missed due to traffic last month. It was an amazing display of nature, just as the events of the Road Scholar Camp were. No matter if you believe in God or Mother Nature or just happenstance, you cannot deny the beauty and amazing features of nature. We saw hundreds of dolphins today (sadly, no whales) and we had a great family experience! It is Sunday, so I looked for a Hymn that related to the ocean, and this is what I found. I like it, no matter where you are, God's love it with you, even in the middle of the ocean!

Saturday In the Park
Day #233 was pretty uneventful for a Summer Saturday. Another relaxing day, on 8/20/16, at least for me (Sarah and the girls had a lot of events to attend and errands to run). I got to stay home and catch up on work (have the email under 450!) and watch the Gold Medal Women's Basketball (USA Gold!) and most of the Men's Football Final (Brazil did it!). Then, we all went to the Phillies game. It was a really nice family evening in Citizen's Bank Park. Saturday, in the Park, if you will. And, as I said in my picture caption, it was not the Fourth of July, but the Chicago song is still appropriate as the song of the day!

8/19/2016 is the 232rd day of 2016. It is National Photography Day. As a palindromic day, it went pretty well. But it was a long day and I have been catching up on work all night. So, I took few pictures today, and I will leave you all with this classic, from Def Leppard

Together Wherever We Go
I left work late on the 231st day of 2016. As the Fall Semester approaches, the work is piling up. But, once I got home on 8/18/2016, we got to spend the evening together as a family. Grabbing a quick dinner, attending a fundraiser at a FroYo place, and hanging out watching the Phillies (WIN!) and the Olympics. I love being together, as a family, wherever we go. Hence, another showtune tonight!

In the Heat of the Night
Day #230 was another hot one.....yes, 8/17/16 was not as hot as previous days, but still hot. Good day of meeting, ending with one of my favorite activities, talking about MBTI to a group of undergraduate student leaders! Now, tonight, as I turn in (again before Midnight - YES!), reflecting on the heat of the week and the heat of tonight, let's enjoy some Ray Charles (how can one NOT enjoy Ray!)

Steam Heat
Another hot one on the 229th day of 2016. 8/16/16 was not only hot, but HUMID too. UGH, it felt like a SAUNA out there. Only song appropriate for a day like today is this one....felt like standing on a steam grate....and not in a good way. Yick!

A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight
Whelp, I returned to work on the 228th day of 2016 and it was a long day of meetings and catching up on 8/15/16. Now it's the evening, and it still feels like a swamp outside - so hot - cannot wait for this heatwave to break. So, tonight - here is a ragtime number, because it IS a hot time, in the old town tonight!

Comfort, Comfort Ye My People
The 227th Day (AMEN!) of 2016 was still, as Ella sang yesterday, Too Darn Hot! But, as 8/14/16 is a Sunday, and I missed last week for a hymn because I was on vacation, I was researching hymns about Summer or Hot Days. I found this hymn, not traditionally thought of as a summer hymn, usually sung during Advent, actually, BUT was originally written for a summer day (6/24). AND, since comfort is something we are all looking for on a day as hot as today, I think it appropriate for today's Hymn of the Week/Song of the Day. Also, made me think about people unluckier than we, who live on the street or in locations without the AC relief that we have. I say extra prayers for them tonight, as I turn in, and hope they find solace and comfort.

Too Darn Hot
I am not sure how I feel about the "Real Feel" forecasts that dominate the weather forecasts these days. But on the 226th of 2016, I believed them. It was again in the High 90s on 8/13/16, But the "Feels Like" temps were in the 110-112 range! It WAS too darn hot outside, so we spent most of the day inside in AC (thank you, Farraday), and the only song appropriate for the song of the day is this Ella Fitzgerald standard! Stay cool everyone!
