So, as the 21st day of 2016 comes to a close, I am feeling a little melancholy. This is because, on 1/21/16, my cousin Becky LaVietes has passed away. Honestly, I do not think I had seen Becky much in the past two decades (maybe even not since my wedding 16.5 years ago), but we have been pretty disconnected in our adult years. I regret this. Maybe if I had reached out to her more, or more effectively, she would have known better how much we cared for her. But, then again, she was suffering from some mental health issues, so maybe there was nothing I could have done to mitigate the feelings of loneliness and isolation that it seemed she was feeling. It is a sad day for my family, especially those on the West Coast and those in her immediate family. But, we are all saddened across the country (and, since people are travelling, across the globe) tonight and I will, with my song, focus on another Billy Joel song. It is a love song, really, but this is more about familial love, not romantic love. I really would have done anything to make Becky know that she was in my heart and in my thoughts.....but I am left to wonder, did she feel my love? I guess it's never the wrong time to make sure those who you love know it. I will try to be better at this...starting now!
